WBEZ's Daily Podcast The Rundown
Friday, September 20th, 2024, was a night for the history books! Chicago's Jay Pritzker Pavilion was buzzing with energy as the city came out in full force for Vocalo's Summer Finale, a free concert celebrating the vibrant and diverse music scene that defines the city. Headlined by the West Side's very own Pivot Gang, the show featured electrifying performances from Kaina, Marquis Hill, and more.
As media partners for the event, Illanoize Radio was in the building, with our very own Bekoe co-hosting alongside the talented Nudia Hernandez, making the night even more special. You could feel it in the air -- this wasn't just a concert; it was a moment for the culture.
Pivot Gang -- Saba, Joseph Chilliams, MFnMelo, Frsh Waters, and their genius producer DaeDae -- made their headlining debut at Millennium Park, delivering performances that honored their five-year journey since their last release and paid tribute to their late members, squeakPIVOT and John Walt. Their set reminded everyone why the West Side runs deep in Chicago's music scene. The group also premiered new singles, including "Who At The Door?", giving fans a preview of their upcoming project.
One of the night's standout moments came when DaeDae took center stage to create a live beat in front of the audience. The crowd watched in awe as he crafted a fresh, hypnotic rhythm on the spot, layering drums, bass, and synths to encapsulate Pivot Gang's unique sound. The audience was fully engaged, witnessing the raw creativity and skill that DaeDae brought to the stage, a testament to Pivot Gang's innovative approach to hip-hop.
During the group's introduction, Bekoe took a moment to honor John Walt, one of Pivot Gang's founding members. He shared a personal story about the first time he met John Walt, reflecting on his kindness, ambition, and artistry. Bekoe also gave a special shoutout to the John Walt Foundation, a nonprofit established after Walt's tragic death, which continues to uplift inner-city artists and ensure his legacy lives on through Chicago's thriving music scene.
The night ended on a high note with an unforgettable collaborative performance by Pivot Gang, Marquis Hill, and Kaina. Together, they closed the set with the deeply emotional and unreleased track titled, "All my Friends" which became a heartfelt tribute to loved ones lost. As Kaina's voice soared, singing the chorus. "All my friends, all my friends even if they are gone or dead,"
the crowd was united in both celebration and reflection. This powerful moment created a profound connection, not only between the performers and the audience but also between the past and present, as Pivot Gang honored their fallen brothers.
â From the soulful sets by DJ Lady D to the boundary-pushing performances, the Summer Finale was more than just a concert -- it was a celebration of Chicago's artistic heartbeat, which pulses through Vocalo's eclectic radio programming. Pivot Gang's tribute to John Walt and squeakPIVOT, combined with DaeDae's live beat creation, left an indelible mark on everyone in attendance. **The Wrap-Up:** Chicago showed up strong, and we at iLLANOiZE Radio were honored to be part of such a monumental night.
