By : Hector De La RosaTwenty twenty-four and twenty-five mark the year of the “Return of The Voice-” Chicago’s own Slique Jay Adams. It is reluctant to hear a familiar voice who left quite an impression on this writer who last heard from him when he obtained a physical copy of his album in the late 2000s.
It is beyond happiness to hear his return to music like he never left before with the oeuvre served in snifter Brown Liquor Winter EP. Slique becomes music’s mixologist crafting a concoction of his finest in R&B textured with soul in bottle service, blending exquisite steppers music. Brown Liquor’s message is deliberate of Slique professing his reverence for women just as how he likes his liquor: desirable, prized in beauty with a signature style in character. The message is proven in the intoxicants “Brown Liquor” + its Remix- a stepper’s anthem andnecessity to one’s playlist that can be on repeat in dance ballrooms the likes of Ray’s Boom Boom Room. The album vocally and sonically starts out as light to imbibe (the eau-de-vie“All That I Need”). Then, gradually becomes richer and velvety smooth with songs us men can relate to as we fall in love with a woman who makes us give up the bachelor or street life settling for love and family (“Change My Ways” and “Chill”). The album ends in Slique overindulging in the reveling without drowning in his sorrows- fermenting his lover’s mind, body, and soul with lyrics of promising ecstasy and lovemaking (the inebriant “Come On Girl” and piquant “Sexual Energy”). The spontaneity of Brown Liquor is Slique’s newfound freedom discovered in his artistry exhibited in his trenchant vocal arrangement without reticence. Far yet throughout the album, listeners can hear inflections and vocal comparisons to Chicago’s own Carl Thomas while channeling his inner Marvin Gaye. The album serves as a reminder as to why he should have been mentioned amongst R&B mainstream peers BJ The Chicago Kid and October London to the legends that paved the way for artists like him. Slique’s ochre, Brown Sugar is enlivened, lush, and robust distilled with love. It is top-shelf quality! By Hector De La Rosa Twitter: Here_2_Edutain_ IG: unleashing_my_inner_illmatic
