Vince Staples made a stop at Riveria Theatre with Baby Rose for the "Black In America" Tour10/30/2024 By: GroovNukeLong Beach, California native, artist, and creator Vince Staples headlined the historic Riviera Theatre in Chicago's Uptown Entertainment District. Chicago was one of the newest stops added to the tour, and the talented artists made it a night to remember for many. This was one of the most laid-back crowds I've encountered at the various headlining shows I've covered. Concertgoers calmly made their way into the theater with very little hassle, and remained patient as the acts hit the stage. There were no periods of music to get the crowd going, just Baby Rose and Vince Staples giving the people what they came to hear. The harmonistic Baby Rose, hailing from Fayetteville, North Carolina, graced the crowd first as she came prepared with a chronological track set. Her latest works is the EP Slow Burn (w/ BADBADNOTGOOD), which released in April 2024. Throughout her career, she's collaborated with the likes of Vince Staples, Big K.R.I.T., Ari Lennox and Bas, and Matt Martians. She finished her set with 'CAROLINE', an ode to her home region, as the crowd was vibing with her full set. Vince Staples soon came after, giving the crowd hit after hit, calling out day one fans to recite the throwbacks with him. Staples is working on his second decade in the game in a memorable way, release three albums that represented a turn on the page in his artistry. Vince always received high praise for his discography, especially for the grittiness found in earlier projects such as Shyne Coldchain and Stolen Youth LP with Mac Miller (Larry Fisherman). His debut album, Summertime '06, and Big Fish Theory showcased an experimental sound while still delivering the infamous West Coast bounce. Staples maintained a chronological set as well, delivering performances of singles from his self-titled LP, Ramona Park Broke My Heart, and his latest album, Dark Times. The energy in the crowd remained electric as the show went on, with Staples performing hits like "Big Fish," "THE SHINING," "AYE! (FREE THE HOMIES)," and "Little Homies." Fans from the balcony to the floor, left feeling satisfied after both Baby Rose's and Vince Staples' sets.
Big ups to the artists for a great show, and to the crowd that brought the energy to match the night. Staples has just four more stops on the tour, wrapping up on November 7th back in San Francisco.
