auBRY drops a heartfelt song about young love
auBRY is new to my ears, but is from my former home Evanston, Illinois. Just yesterday he dropped his debut LP How I Did This Year, and it's a doozy (write up coming soon on my site.)
My choice song is what you see below, Teenagers. I hate to make comparisons, but in this case I'll briefly touch on it. XV was one of my favorite artists in '09/'10, and it's been hard to find anyone even close to his unique personality and lyrical style. Enter auBRY. Teenagers is a love song, set in high school. auBRY calls his love interest "wonderful" and combines rapping and a little crooning to express it in a very relatable way. Young love is hard to harness without sounding corny, but auBRY does it beautifully. He even makes it catchy, similar to an XV track such as Foreign Exchange Student. I'd even go as far as saying auBRY executes it better. Let's also note that he produced this all on his own. There is a good amount of reverb in this, making the song still uptempo in the midst of a song about romance.
