Schama Noel and GroovNuke gets up for an iLLANOiZE exclusive Q+A, where Schama discusses rapping, songwriting, inspirations and more.
Schama Noel has been doing this rap stuff for some time now. Putting in work is something that is paying off for Noel, as he's up next to blow. The rap artist has two talents he balances well on his way to the top. Schama is an outstanding lyricist, but his songwriting is something that will silently take you away. More than likely you've ran into a few bars from him on Twitter and you've enjoyed them. He's the orchestrator of the booming @RapLike Twitter page.
His album Millennials was released in the middle of summer 2018. It is one that will stand the test of time. With tracks such as 'Thoughts of a Loner Pt.2' 'Ghetto Love/Fair' and 'Divided States of America', Noel will grab your attention with his food for thought message delivery.
GroovNuke: First things first, where are you from bro?
Schama Noel: I was originally born In Haiti, moved to Orlando when I was about two and have been living here since then. GroovNuke: How long have you've been into doing music? Schama Noel: I mean I wrote my first poem when I was in 3rd grade haha but we all start out as just writers, I released my first official mixtape on Datpiff in 2013, so that’s when I started taking it seriously but I’ve always been rapping, I knew that’s what I wanted to do when I was a freshman in High School, I was 14.
GroovNuke: Can you explain social media impact with RapLike?
Schama Noel: RapLike is one of a kind, because it lives & dies with me, it cannot be replicated, and it was such an amazing marketing scheme to use because a lot of people aren’t going to give an unknown artist a chance but an unknown artist that can rap like their favorites? They’re all over that. It’s how I created my fanbase. Over the years I've been mentioned by Joey Badass, Vic Mensa, Lupe Fiasco, Immortal technique, etc. RapLike is definitely one of my greatest creations the only thing is my biggest tweets weren’t water marked so I missed out on a lot of opportunities because people don’t like to tag lol, but its cool, they’ll find out who I am eventually.
GroovNuke: What do you feel is your most thought provoking track?
Schama Noel: My most thought-provoking track is probably 'Thoughts of a loner pt. 2'? But the first one might be just as deep, I honestly don’t know but I can tell you that the series is probably some of the most relatable music you’ll hear according to everyone that has listened including people that don’t even like rap.
GroovNuke: Biggest musical inspirations?
Schama Noel: My biggest music inspirations are Andre 3000, Kendrick & Kanye. On a music tip these guys have pushed the culture forward in ways unimaginable, unparalleled creativity, diversity, etc They are the cream of the crop when it comes to my influences. GroovNuke: Talk about the creation of your latest project 'Millennials' ? Schama Noel: Millennials is pretty self explanatory…an album..about..yes you guessed it, Millennials! The first song made was ‘’Every Night’’, we recorded that last year summer of 2017 before millennials was even conceptualized, I just found myself making songs about everything that was going on in my life & today's society and it just organically formed into my EP. I think it’s a great reflection of our generation.
GroovNuke: How meaningful is the 'Millennials' project to you?
Schama Noel: 'Millennials' means a lot because I know a couple years down the line everything I conveyed in that project will still be relevant to whats going on. I personally think its ahead of its time but that’s what I'm here for. GroovNuke: Do you feel as if your target audience of "Millennials" will hear the project and wake up? Schama Noel: Yes I believe my target audience right now is 18-25, like my MAIN core fan base, but as I get further in my career that gap will increase, & bleed over to younger and older people that will also receive the message that was relayed on this project, they will definitely get it…the things I speak about on this project are universal.
GroovNuke: What is your songwriting process?
Schama Noel: My writing process is pretty simple, if I hear instrumentation that triggers something in me, I am compelled to write. So ill spend hours just going through beats until I find something that resonates with me and the rest is history. GroovNuke: Can I ask who you see yourself working with in the future? Schama Noel: I can see myself working with Smino, Saba, JID, Joey Bada$$, Goldlink etc pretty much all the young cats that make colorful, soulful and meaningful music in today’s generations. As far as the older cats, Kendrick is on top of that list.
GroovNuke: What is your end goal as an artist/songwriter?
Schama Noel: My end goal as an artist/songwriter is to really get a large group of people that hate rap/don’t care for it to fall in love with my music, I just want to shed a positive light on Hip Hop.
