By Julie S.Brockhampton member Kevin Abstract drops a grounding breaking self directed video in Miserable America Brockhampton member Kevin Abstract is an innovator. Want proof? Peep his groundbreaking 2016 sophomore album American Boyfriend. It was his best offering yet, and his most revealing. He speaks on his sexuality, and what it was like growing up with the realization he was gay. There are also records about his challenges as a teenager, and relationships romantic, familial, and otherwise. His ability to speak candidly about these topics that are taboo in the hip hop world has always impressed me. That being said, his videos have always encapsulated on these themes. Just a few days ago he released one of the best visuals of the year in Miserable America. Sonically, this is him at his most vulnerable. He takes us along with him on his experience with his mother’s homophobia, his deteriorating relationship with his boyfriend, and suicidal ideation based off these two struggles. The visual, directed by Kevin himself, isn’t as straightforward as you might expect. The way he presented his inner struggles is astounding, and not something you’ll understand from the jump. It’s not so much a cinematic video as a complex look into Kevin’s mind, using elements and characters that connect to his turmoil. I highly recommend you peep this, and stream American Boyfriend on Spotify or Apple Music.
