These days it's difficult finding an artist who's at a perfect place in their career to do even greater things with their music. Let's be honest, we can all go on Social Media and come across music we enjoy, but how often do you come across an artist that's music makes your face scrunch like you got a whiff of something foul? Then seconds later you're tweeting the link out because everyone needs to know how unreal it is? Well, that's what it's like to be a Jayaire Woods fan right now. By this time next year, everyone in the world will know what Chicago’s “Woodside” native is all about.
This past Saturday evening Creatives Only presented Jayaire Woods’ first ever headline show, “ The Woodside Connect,” featuring a stacked bill with UFB Plymkrs, Mfn Melo, and Femdot. The Refuge Live on the 400 Block of S Clark, just West of Van Buren St. was graced with 4 hours of pure Hip-Hop and vibes that either had you jumping up and down or standing in awe. The tone was set from the very beginning as Gabriel, RiQo the Menace, Armani Devon, Grizzie Grime, and Dero DeFrance all delivered sets that didn't just make you hear the words, but actually feel them. The lighting darkened and the beat dropped as the Plymkrs took the stage. Energy spread like wildfire as the entire crowd was bouncing up and down 10 seconds into their hit “Trapical” and just like that it became a party. These guys have a niche for making you sway the dreads you don't have on your head and I believe that’s a true indicator of how fun seeing them live actually is.
With SqueakPivot providing the tunes on the 1s & 2s the Refuge was lit. Then came on Mfn Melo who delivered a performance you don't see too often. Melo performed alongside guitarist Jameson Brenner, as well as a special appearance by fellow Pivoter Joseph Chilliams for the banger “Buck.” If you don't believe a big guy can move then you're in for a surprise as Mfn Melo does it all on stage.
The moment is nearing as Quality Controls very own, Jayaire Woods is almost due, but one artist remains with the task of putting on one hell of a show before he goes front and center. He goes by the name of Femdot and can also be called the future because well, that's the impression he left the audience with Saturday night. As Femdot spoke with the crowd and performed his classic “King Dilla Freestyle,” the crowd had its hands up and it was evident they were feeling every word being said. As we all already knew Femdot was something special, seeing him perform with such poise was the staple. “2 shoes Woodside….” blared through the sound system as the man of the hour stood on stage basking in the glorious moment every artist dreams of. Beginning his night with fan favorite “2 Shoes,” he also performed much of his most recent works from "Free the Fall," including “Man of the Year” edging the crowd to its loudest point of the night! Saturday was the mark of an incredibly bright future for the Chicago artist and for everyone who got the experience of a lifetime, we witnessed history.
