By: Jimmie SykesThe throwback gem of the day is the C4, released nine years ago by Kendrick Lamar.
Kendrick Lamar dropped the ‘C4’ mixtape January 30, 2009.
The tape is one of those projects that most people didn’t appreciate until historical context (time) was put behind it. When it first dropped, not even a year after the famous The Carter 3 dropped, Lil Wayne’s groundbreaking singles were still in rotation. Lil Wayne is one on Kendrick’s rap inspiration, and what other way to pay homage to one of your favorite artists. Carter 3 dropped and Wayne took a seat at the top of the rap game.
Ultimately, Wayne influenced a wave of up and coming hip-hop stars, such as Young K.Dot himself. It took a heavily inspired and up to the challenge artist like K.Dot to take on the feat to rap over the beats produced on C3, such as ‘A Milli’, ‘Mrs. Officer’, and ‘Tie My Hands’. Plus, Kendrick was successful in my opinion.
