LA's Zach Smith and featured artist Felly give a refreshing take on hip hop's drug of choice
LA’s Zach Smith has built a sizable following in the last few years. He has a well developed flow, and most notably, an excellent choice in production. I was EXTREMELY pleased with this year’s full length Before The Come Up, and didn’t skip a single track.
Since the project, he’s dropped 4 noteworthy singles, proving he doesn’t like to go a week without recording. His 5th (in just a month’s time) has come today in the form of Must Be High. Yes, songs about weed are overdone in hip hop, and I often skip past them. But this one is a refreshing take on the often exhaustive theme. On Must Be High he’s linked with (as far as I can tell) a new producer, Kato. Kato provides the backdrop Zach performs best on, a minimal beat until the build up of hard hitting drums. Featured artist Felly performs just as well. Although both Zach and Felly approach records in a similar way, (girls, sex, and getting high) they use it to their advantage. This song is addictive, and will continue to build his buzz beyond Los Angeles.
